Cracked Labs
Wolfie Christl is a public-interest technologist and researcher with a background in sociology and tech policy. He is the director of Cracked Labs, a small nonprofit based in Vienna, Austria, and, since 2025, a senior researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab. His research focuses on the commercial misuse of consumer data, algorithmic decision-making and the datafication of work.
He published several reports on digital surveillance and algorithmic control and contributed to investigations by civil society organisations, consumer protection associations and trade unions. His research contributed to legal action against unlawful data practices in Europe and the US. Christl and his projects have been cited in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Financial Times.
