Virgilio Almeida is a Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University. He served as the National Secretary for Information Technology Policies in the Brazilian government (2011–2015) and was Chair of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) as well as NETmundial, the Global Multi-Stakeholder Conference on the Future of Internet Governance (2014). Virgilio is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
