George Metakides pursued an academic career at MIT, Cornell and Rochester University until 1978, when he returned to Greece after being elected to the Chair of Logic at the University of Patras. He has held senior positions in the European Commission including the Directorship of the ESPRIT program until 2002 when he returned to his professorship at Patras until his retirement in 2012.
He helped establish the World Wide Web consortium in 1994. Metakides is Honorary President of the Digital Enlightenment Forum, member of the steering committee of Digital Humanism and member of the Board of the Web Science Trust.
